| Log Drums
Information
Log Drums are large double ended drums, traditionally Native American Indian in style. They are made by patiently hollowing out solid logs and stretching natural skin over both ends to produce a deep sonorous tone.
Carved and sculptured from reclaimed tree trunks log drums are double ended drums. The drum heads and lacing are hand fleshed cow skin creating its unique tone: Deep and earthy, reaching for the sky. These drums are created over many days and are hand finished.
The natural shape of the tree is maintained so each drum is truly one of a kind. I make my own bees wax wood polish to enhance the story lines (the grain) of the trees. Logs used are slash pine, blue gum, red iron bark. These are in order of weight, with slash pine being much lighter than iron bark.
Traditionally, a log chosen for a drum has a hole (a ‘pipe’) in it which is then hand chiseled to a thin frame. Of uncomplicated (simple)(straightforward) design and construction, it is a beautiful instrument that sounds at home no matter where she is played.
Play with hands or any type of beater for a drum song to remember.
I love the log drum. She was the first drum I made. It was the spirit of the log drum that created my connection with the power of the drum. It forged a memory of times long ago and a great peace that dwells within me. Through my hands on her skin I felt the thunder of the buffalo. With my hands on her skin, I could hear the songs of celebration and stories of today becoming the legends of tomorrow.
I could smell the white sage burning. I felt for the first time that I belonged to this tribe. This tribe of the drum and white sage.
Little Log Drums Made from recycled tins covered with fabric with drum heads and lacing made of real raw hide. Thick cotton rope for handle. Bright of color, energy and sound.
Little Log Drums sound best played with the fingers nearest to the rim. A joy to play, purely indulges the child within. Made from non-toxic materials.
A Little Log Drums makes a suitable gift for all ages.

| River Drums
Information
Sometimes referred to as an ocean drum, the double sided frame drum has a long tradition with shamans and healers. Due to the rattles inside it, this drum has many percussive sounds with all the versatility of a frame drum.
The river drum offers much in exploration of rhythm and movement as well as a worthy tool of healers, ceremonial performers, shamans, dancers, musicians, music therapists and anyone with a passion for the texture of tone (timbre).
I am a River Drum.
I sing of the song of water falling from the sky, dancing over rocks to the ocean, touching sand.
I am a double sided frame drum, made in a sacred manner and infused with Reiki healing symbols.
I am made with goat skins that have been fleshed by my co-creator, Jennifer.
I can be played with hands and fingers, or a beater, and I love to dance.
I am a drum of healing, prayer and play.

| Gourd Rattles
Information
Used with significance in ritual, ceremony and shamanic practice. Create and sustain energetic movement of body. Regarded to be as important as the drum in many cultures.
The gourds used to create these rattles are grown locally, without pesticides and artificial supplements.
Allowed to dry naturally, taking approximately 12 months to cure. I cut the head of the gourd, clean and remove the soft dry pulp. I then add rice, and or un-popped pop corn. I use deer, goat or kangaroo skin, to create the drum head and lacing.
Rice creates a soft sound; pop-corn more loud. The drum heads can be played with the fingers,or with a light drum beater-chop sticks are great, the drum head does amplify the sound of the rattle. The lacing can be used to attach feathers and bells. when possible, i drill a small hole in the stem this is so the rattle can be hung and stored safely |

| Beaters
Information
What you use to touch the Drum Head to obtain sound, is influenced by culture, types of drums and skins, resources available, and the sound that is desired.
Many drums are played with the hands and fingers.I have found that experimentation with different types of drum beaters, results in pleasing sounds, unusual effects and textures.
To make the most out of your drumming experience Mountain River Drums makes a beautifull range of Drum Beaters. |
