Information :  Gourd Rattles

Gourd Rattles
Gourd Rattles

Used with significance in ritual, ceremony and shamanic practice. Create and sustain energetic movement of body. Regarded to be as important as the drum in many cultures.

The gourds used to create these rattles are grown locally, without pesticides and artificial supplements.

Allowed to dry naturally, taking approximately 12 months to cure. I cut the head of the gourd, clean and remove the soft dry pulp. I then add rice, and or un-popped pop corn. I use deer, goat or kangaroo skin, to create the drum head and lacing.

Rice creates a soft sound; pop-corn more loud. The drum heads can be played with the fingers,or with a light drum beater-chop sticks are great,   the drum head does amplify the sound of the rattle. The lacing can be used to attach feathers and bells.
when possible, i drill a small hole in the stem this is so the rattle can be hung and stored safely
